NOTE: Cross section drawings & symbols are available by clicking the "Sizes, 2D..." tab above.

Glass

+
Glass Terminology
Standard - Glass for High Performance (HP) Units

Double pane glass* achieves energy efficiency across various climate zones

  1. Double pane insulating glass unit
  2. LoE²-270 (for optional LoE coatings, see Glass Terminology)
  3. Argon gas (for exceptions, see Glass Terminology)
  4. Thermo-Edge, stainless steel spacer bars

*Double pane glass is standard for most Kolbe products. Size and other limitations may apply. In doors, both panes are tempered for safety. Windows may be ordered tempered as well, which may be required due to the glass size and/or to meet local building codes.

Standard - Glass for Impact Performance (IP) Units

  1. Double pane insulating glass unit
  2. LoE²-270 on surface #3 (for optional LoE coatings, see Glass Terminology)
  3. Argon gas (for exceptions, see Glass Terminology)
  4. Thermo-Edge, stainless steel spacer bars
  5.  Impact Laminated Glass - two pieces of glass fused together with a plastic interlayer
  • Adds protection in severe weather
  • Helps prevent broken glass from causing injury
  • Helps to protect against intruders
  • Greater UV blockage prevents furniture and fabrics from fading
  • Reduces sound transmission

Standard - Glass for Energy Performance (EP) Units

Triple pane glass units for EP units achieve insulating values nearly twice that of current ENERGY STAR® requirements:

  1. Triple pane insulating glass unit
  2. LoE²-270 on surface #2  (for optional LoE coatings, see Glass Terminology)
  3. Argon gas (for exceptions, see Glass Terminology)
  4. Thermo-Edge, stainless steel spacer bars
  5. LoE²-180 on surface #5

Option - Neat Glass

Neat® glass goes through a special sputter-coating process to make the exterior surface ultra smooth. Water "sheets off" more readily than it would on uncoated glass, helping rinse away dirt, and therefore requiring less cleaning time (view video).

NOTE: Not available on units with specialty glass on surface #1 or 2.

Option - Preserve Protective Film

Preserve™ is an optional, protective film that protects glass from scratches during transit and construction, as well as helping to reduce the time involved in job site clean-up (view video).

NOTE: Not available on single-glazed units, units with true divided lites or other small insulating glass units, or some types of decorative glass. Contact your local Kolbe dealer for more information.

Divided Lites

Option - Performance Divided Lites (PDL)

Performance divided lites offer the appearance of true divided lites without using separate lites of glass. This achieves energy efficiency along with historical beauty. When PDL bars are requested:

  1. High-profile, beveled bars are adhered to the interior & exterior of a single insulating glass unit; bar widths include 7/8", 1-1/8", 1-3/4" and 2-1/4"
  2. Optionally, low-profile, beveled bars are adhered to the interior of a single insulating glass unit*, while high profile bars are adhered to the exterior; bar widths include 7/8" and 1-1/8"
  • The bars are finished to match the exterior or interior of the product
  • Champagne-colored spacer bars are positioned within the glass unit to align with the interior & exterior bars, further simulating the appearance of true divided lites
  • The spacer bars allow "air flow" throughout the unit, creating a large, unobstructed thermal break

*The optional low-profile interior bars match the standard low-profile interior PDL bars for active double hungs, single hungs & single sliders.

Glazing Bead

Standard Glazing Bead

  • Exterior glazed with a snap-in, friction fit bead to secure the glass
  • Beveled-type profile like traditional wood windows
