Green Initiatives Brochure Describes Products That Perform
Kolbe Products Meet ENERGY STAR guidelines, LEED requirements, and Other Rating Systems
Wausau, Wis. (October 1, 2009) - Kolbe's new "Green Initiatives" brochure shares how these window and door products can contribute to sustainable design projects and address environmental concerns with their energy-efficient performance, sustainable wood species, and durable finishes.
In addition, "Green Initiatives" describes how these products can help property owners and builders seeking to comply with green building programs including the ENERGY STAR® program, Green Building Initiative's Green Globes™, NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines, and U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) residential and commercial rating systems.
Demonstrating its commitment to these programs, to its customers' green goals, and to its company-wide initiatives, Kolbe has earned Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody Certification: No. SCS-COC 002040. FSC-certified wood is an option on many Kolbe window and door products. Wood species available include alder, cherry, fir, mahogany, maple, oak, pine, walnut and other wood species. This option currently is available on Ultra and Heritage Series products.
Along with sustainable wood choices, Kolbe uses recycled content in its products:
- Ultra Series extruded aluminum billet consists of 50-75% recycled material.
- Roll-formed cladding used in Kolbe's Classic Series products contains 65-70% recycled aluminum.
- Standard glass used in Kolbe's products contains 25-30% recycled content.
Kolbe can provide ENERGY STAR-rated windows, with high-performance glass options that contribute to a home or building's overall performance. Many of Kolbe's wood windows are certified by National Fenestration Rating Council and carry an ENERGY STAR label. Kolbe's ThermaPlus™ LoE glass further enhances windows' thermal performance, saving homeowners' money in reduced energy costs. ThermaPlus glass helps meet more stringent energy performance criteria required for federal tax credits in 2009 or 2010.
Kolbe's Windquest® Series casements, awnings and studio units also are available as Energy Performance (EP) windows. A 1.25-inch triple glazing system option helps these products achieve top tier energy performance ratings, with insulating values nearly twice those currently required by ENERGY STAR, and are 30 times better than the industry standard in terms of air infiltration. Windquest Series EP units can achieve R-values of 5 with the standard glass offering. These units are also certified to an R-PG50 (residential performance grade) and structural DP50 rating.
Enhancing these long-lasting, durable, low-maintenance window and doors, Kolbe's products are finished with sensitivity to environmental air quality and the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by:
- Using a fully encapsulated process in which the VOCs are destroyed when applying wood preservative and 70% PVDF fluoropolymer exterior finishes;
- Providing interior prefinishing with water-based, low-VOC stains and paints, saving time and materials during field-application, clean-up and disposal;
- Offering wood windows and doors with BetterVue® fiberglass screen mesh that has been certified by GREENGUARD®; and
- Finishing its Ultra Series extruded aluminum-clad products a with a 70% fluoropolymer exterior coating that carries up to a 30-year warranty.
