Mallard Creek Residence Highlighted

Architectural Record

Mallard Creek Residence is among Architectural Record's Feature Houses. With project details and photos by Tomecek Studio Architecture, you can read about this home built on a vast landscape with views of the Rocky Mountains and Long's Peak. The home includes Kolbe windows and a Point Five copper entrance door.

Fort Collins Magazine

Mallard Creek was also featured by writer Sara Goldblatt in Fort Collins Magazine, as it is located between nearby Lonetree Reservoir and Long's Peak. Kolbe windows are featured prominently in the photos by photographer John Gibbons, of Tomecek Studio Architecture.

Did you hear the chirping? Retrofit Magazine highlighted automation opportunities with Kolbe products.

"Shielded by snowy trees amidst rocky outcrops, this cabin in Golden, B.C., feels middle-of-nowhere—except it's right on the slopes of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, with prime ski-in/ski-out access. A family retreat, it's a luxe yet down-to-earth alpine hideaway built with hygge in mind.

"The enigmatic-sounding Danish word translates roughly to comfort, or coziness. Hygge is a wood-burning fire, a cashmere blanket, a glass of mulled wine or gløgg—just what you'd want at a winter cabin."

Check out the Jan./Feb. 2016 issue of Western Living Magazine, which features a Danish-inspired ski cabin designed by the architecture firm McKinley Burkart. Article by Barb Sligl. Vibrant photography by Dave Best and Bryce Meyer.

"Living well is more important than living large," Steve Thomas declared while giving an informal tour of Sea Cove Cottage. Thomas is well-known for having been host of PBS's This Old House and Discovery's Renovation Nation. He and his wife had just completed a two-year renovation of their cozy 1,300-square-foot home built in 1905 by a fisherman in the St. George village of Port Clyde, Maine.

Mimi Bigelow Steadman talked houses and boats with Thomas for the January/February 2016 issue of Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine in the article "This Little House." Sarah Szwajkos captured the light and airy cottage in a fabulous collection of photographs.

Happy endings create new beginnings in the renovation story of Sea Cove Cottage. To see the sea, Thomas enjoys the view through Kolbe windows, which replicate the home's beautiful history, while preparing it for an efficient future.

The Jan./Feb. 2016 issue of Housetrends Magazine features an innovative South Tampa home. "It's in the Details" by Lyla Haggard describes this new construction as "distinctive."

Campbell Contracting LLC, a Certified Green Professional, followed the owners' lead in taking the 13,000 square-foot dwelling in a trendy direction. As evidenced in photos by Johan Roetz, geometric shapes and energy efficient casement windows contribute to a somewhat modern aesthetic. Still, European-style features and fine furniture — like an ornate billiard table in the game room — mingle harmoniously with segment head French doors by Kolbe windows & doors.

Kolbe Windows Meet Peak Performance Goals

Architect E.J. Meade and builder Jerry Long rose to the challenge of taking on a zero energy home with fierce weather conditions at an elevation of 9,200 feet. Everything from the textures and colors used in the home reflect the spectacular views seen from a high-elevation home in the Rockies. "The house's orientation made the use of triple-pane windows essential... The wind comes off of there at 80 to 90 miles per hour, and the walls are almost 40 percent glazing." By the use of Kolbe windows and doors, Meade was able to achieve his goal of reaching the LEED Silver Level with 30 percent more efficiency than national code demands.

Rancho Del Cielo is a 2014 Palladio Award Winner

Miles of undeveloped land sits at the base of the Davis Mountains in West Texas. Here, a couple fell in love with a 1940s ranch compound built by a Texas railroad baron. In 1995, after furniture and antiques were moved in, a fire destroyed everything — even melting steel within, as if it the home were an adobe oven. As a result, the couple contracted with Michael G. Imber, Architects to design a new house that would recapture the spirit of that original. The result is Rancho Del Cielo (translated Sky Ranch), a home that has received one of Period Homes' 2014 Palladio Awards. This ranch home is flooded with light from Kolbe windows. The natural light sets off handcrafted pine corbels and beams on the ceiling, while the windows frame the terrace and landscape beyond.

"In trying to create a house that satisfies modern lifestyles, we really tried to capture the spirit and character of the house that had been so that it maintains the same sort of relationship with the dramatic landscape of the original compound," says Michael G. Imber, Architect.

Award Winner

One of Period Homes' 2012 Palladio Awards goes to a home which features Kolbe windows: Georgian of Today.

"Three sets of French windows overlooking the courtyard serve as the [kitchen's] focal point... the owners liked to open them and make the kitchen feel more a part of the outdoors,' says Thies [principal of J. Lawton Thies Architects]. 'The kitchen is centered with the garage, which we treated as a garden element. The focus of the kitchen view and courtyard is the limestone entryway to the garage. It's one of the nicer moments in the house.'"

What Lean Doesn't Mean

In the June 2012 issue of Door & Window magazine, Kolbe Executive Vice President, Jeff DeLonay, is quoted often. "'If you want to make a profit you have to sell something,' says De Lonay. 'The reason you implement lean is for your customer. You have to paint a picture for them of why you are doing this so they can clearly see it.'"

This article by Tara Taffera, editor/publisher of DWM/Shelter magazine, provides great insight into the complexity of manufacturing windows & doors, and how "lean improvement" can be used to make any business more efficient.

Period Homes Magazine, Additional Spaces

The May 2012 issue of Period Home magazine features the restoration of a 1938 Colonial Revival home. It fit well within its Boston suburb -- a quiet, tree-lined boulevard near the local school and commuter rail stration. Yet, the owners wanted to modernize, expand, and embellish on the character of the home.

Kolbe windows complement the style, yet sizes that are larger than the original windows brighten the home. Now, the owners see their world in a whole new light.
